Shirley Broderick,Dedicated Talented Actress And A Pillar of Vancouver Theatre Has Passed Away
The Vancouver arts community mourns the passing of the immensely talented Shirley Broderick, a dedicated actress whose long and vibrant career became a thread in the fabric of the city’s theatre history.
Broderick’s journey began after rigorous training at London’s prestigious Italia Conti Theatre School. She arrived in Canada in 1948, and her destiny was sealed in a 1957 UBC production of *The Tempest*, where she played Ariel to Robert Clothier’s Trinculo. The couple married just three months later, forging both a personal and professional partnership that would delight audiences for decades.

A longtime member of the Arts Club Theatre Company, Broderick’s stage highlights were many. She delivered a powerful performance alongside her husband in *The Gin Game* in 1982, and charmed as Mrs. Higgins in *My Fair Lady* in 2002. Her final, wonderfully dry and severe turn as Lady Catherine de Bourgh in *Pride and Prejudice* in 2016 reminded everyone of her impeccable comic timing and presence. As a fellow cast member recalled, “she was a delight to have in the room.”
Beyond the stage, Broderick’s career spanned radio, television, and film, often collaborating with Clothier on projects like *The Beachcombers*. Her legacy is one of craft, commitment, and a deep love for the performing arts. Shirley Broderick will be deeply missed by her many friends, family, and the entire community she helped build. Our sincerest condolences go out to all who loved her.
