Paul Ascunsion, Kona Man Identified in December Death Investigation
Hawaiʻi Island police have identified the man found deceased last month in Kailua-Kona as 51-year-old Paul Ascunsion, a local resident.
According to authorities, Ascunsion’s body was discovered in a grassy area near businesses on Kaiwi Street on the morning of December 15, 2025. Officers responded to a report of an unresponsive man at approximately 7:27 a.m. and confirmed he was dead.

From the outset, police indicated there were no immediate signs of foul play. The case was investigated by the Kona Patrol Division, and a standard coroner’s inquest was initiated.
In an update, police have now stated that the investigation revealed no evidence of suspicious circumstances or foul play. As a result, the case has been formally closed. The findings suggest Ascunsion’s death was due to non-criminal causes, though the exact manner remains with the medical examiner. The closure brings an end to the official inquiry into the incident.
